Cami: Baby Tracker’s iCloud Backup is a file in your own iCloud Drive, in the Cami folder. It is not the iCloud Backup in the iOS Settings app, which Apple uses to back up your whole iPhone. This page is about Cami’s.

Each copy holds the whole family’s log, not one child. It is a JSON file: plain text that Cami can restore from, and that other apps can open.

iCloud Backup or Export?

Both give you a copy of your data. They are made for different jobs.

iCloud Backup Export
What it is A copy of the family’s whole log, kept for you A file of one child’s entries, made when you ask
When it is made By itself, daily or weekly, and when you tap Back Up Now Only when you tap Export Data
Where it goes Your iCloud Drive, in the Cami folder Wherever you save it in Files
Format JSON, a text file Cami can read back CSV, for Numbers, Excel or Google Sheets
What it holds The family’s name, the children and their profiles, members’ names and roles, and every entry with its details and notes One child’s entries plus the family’s pumping, without names
Made for Getting your history back in Cami A spreadsheet, or your child’s doctor

To make a CSV file, see Export your child’s log as a CSV file.

Turn it on or off

Open More, Settings, iCloud Backup.

  • Back Up to iCloud Drive is off until you turn it on. The switch is for this iPhone, and covers every family you are in on it.
  • Last Saved to iCloud says when the last copy reached iCloud.
  • Back Up Now makes a copy at once, even when the switch is off.

Cami makes the automatic copy when you open the app and the time since the last copy has passed, for the family you are in at that moment. If nothing changed since the last copy, Cami does not make a new file.

Every family member’s iPhone with the switch on saves its own copy, to that person’s own iCloud Drive. If you and your partner both have it on, you each have a copy.

Choose how often, and how many to keep

Open More, Settings, iCloud Backup, Advanced.

  • Backup Frequency: Daily or Weekly.
  • Backups to Keep: Latest only, or 7, 14 or 30 backups. The default is 14. When a new copy has reached iCloud, Cami removes the oldest ones beyond that number.
  • Storage shows how much space the backup files take in iCloud Drive.

These choices apply to this family on this iPhone. Other phones keep their own.

Where the files are

Tap Show in Files to open the folder. In the Files app, the copies are in iCloud Drive › Cami › Backups, with a folder for each family. The folder has a long code for a name, not the family’s name. Each file starts with backup- and ends with .json.

What is in a copy

  • The family’s name.
  • Each child’s name and profile: birth date, due date, birth time, birth weight, length and head circumference, place of birth, sex and emoji. Not the child’s photo.
  • Each member’s name and role. Not their email.
  • Every entry, with its times, details and notes. Entries that were deleted are in the file, marked as deleted.
  • The version of Cami that made it.

Restore from a backup

Restore adds the entries from a backup file to the family you are in now.

  1. Open More, Settings, iCloud Backup.
  2. Tap Restore from a Backup… and pick a backup file in Files.
  3. Check the sheet: the backup’s family and date, how many entries it adds, and under Children, which child in this family gets each child’s entries.
  4. Tap the button at the bottom. It names how many entries it restores.

When it finishes, the iCloud Backup screen says how many entries were restored, how many were already there and how many were skipped. The restored entries show on every family phone.

How Cami decides what to add:

  • Children are matched by the child itself, or by name. Capital letters and accents do not matter. A child in the file with no match in this family shows Not in this family — skipped, and their entries are not added. Pumping belongs to the family, so it is added as long as one child matches.
  • Only entries are restored. Children, profiles, members and the family’s name are not. To restore into a new family, first add the children with the same names.
  • Nothing is added twice. An entry that is already in the log, as it is in the file or newer, is skipped. Restoring the same file again adds nothing.
  • Deletions stay deleted. Entries that were deleted in the file are not restored, and a restore never brings back an entry you deleted later.
  • Running timers are not restored. Only finished entries are.

Privacy

The copy is readable. Cami does not encrypt it: your iCloud account protects it. Cami’s service never receives it. Anyone who can open your iCloud Drive can read it, so leave the switch off if you do not want the copy.

With Advanced Data Protection for iCloud turned on, Apple encrypts iCloud Drive end to end, and so this copy too.

Troubleshooting

The iCloud Backup row says Set up

iCloud Drive is off on this iPhone, or the switch is off. Open the iOS Settings app, tap your name, then iCloud, and turn on iCloud Drive. Then turn on Back Up to iCloud Drive in Cami.

iCloud storage is full

iCloud did not take the newest copy. Free up space in iCloud, or add storage, in the iOS Settings app under your name, then iCloud. Your earlier copies are kept.

The last backup didn't finish

Tap Back Up Now to try again.

The last copy hasn't reached iCloud

The copy is saved on your iPhone and goes up when iCloud can take it. Check that you have a connection and space in iCloud. The screen may also say Saved on this device. Waiting to upload to iCloud.

That file isn't a Cami backup

Pick a .json file from the Cami folder in iCloud Drive. A CSV file from Export is not a backup.

This backup is from a newer version of Cami

Update Cami from the App Store, then try again.

Everything in this backup is already here

Every entry in the file is already in the log, so there is nothing to add.
